| The Johnson U.S. Map Project Reference Tool Website - Featuring a DH WEB Custom Developed Database for Historical Maps |
DH WEB is very proud to announce the recent launch of a custom new mapping reference tool website for The Johnson U.S. Map Project.
G.Curtis, from the University of Kentucky Libraries Map Collection, recently had this to say regarding The Johnson U.S. Map Project website:
"I just cataloged a Johnson and Ward map yesterday and had to guess at the date. So, I tried your web site and found that I was correct. Only wish I had known about it sooner. It is now in my cataloging tools favorites list. Thanks so much!"
Through the use of a custom DH WEB designed database, the Johnson U.S. Map Project has created a data set of the changes within the U.S. and state maps of the Alvin J. Johnson's /Family Atlas/ which allows the users of this website to definitively date the publication of any loose U.S. map from these atlases, which were published between the years 1860-87.
Also presented are historical essays on the life of Johnson and his atlases and his relationship with other 19th Century American Atlas publishers, J.H. Colton and Augustus Mitchell.
The Johnson U.S. Map Project represents the work of Ira S. Lourie. He has presented his work on Johnson and his atlases to the Washington Map Society and has been published in the Map Society’s journal, the Portolan.
In creating the database for the Johnson U.S. Map Project, Ira S. Lourie has studied over 85 Johnson Family Atlases from 9 libraries, 4 private collections, and several pre-auction exhibitions. Numerous loose atlas maps have also been studied including a large collection at the Library of Congress.
